It looks like the long running April fools joke is errr still happening, over the past few days Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that the Government will carry on with it's plans to commission a new Royal yacht. When the Conservatives were running for election their manifesto pledges were slim to non existent the first was "get brexit done" and "leveling up" on the former policy of Brexit won't be fully done if ever however that's another blog post
The latter policy was to "level up" which is another policy that is still to materialize, all the Conservatives had to say on levelling up was that they were going to build forty new hospitals one has still yet to be built and increase the size of the police for...that was heavily reduced by the...Conservatives....Now it appears the Tory Party want to level up the monarchy's fleet of vehicles.
The Royal family have previously had a yacht which was decommissioned in 1997 and now resides in Edinburgh, I remember going for a tour around the yacht as a child with my dad and brother. Now it looks like there will be a second one going to sea.
But what is the point in spending two hundred million pounds on a new vessel? I have heard some really strange arguments from Government ministers who say that will be a good marketing aide to brand GB and will help seal trade deals. Well if the only thing that will help us sign new trade deals with other countries post Brexit is a ship then we all need to be worried.
This year nurses in the NHS were told that they would only get a pay rise of one percent now Mr Johnson is planning on spending two hundred million on a new ship this is totally absurd and a massive kick in the teeth to people who have sacrificed everything in the past year and it is also a massive insult to the millions of people in this country who are just about surviving on low wages and high rent.
I'm a patriot I love my country and want to see it doing well, however what I don't think is patriotic is seeing your fellow countrymen in distress and deciding to spend millions on something that will ultimately be useless.
Since writing it has also emerged the money that was going to be spent on pupils to catch up after the COVID pandemic has been cut by the treasury, it was slated that the Royal yacht was going to be named after Prince Phillip, how about we do something to properly honor his name and give more to children and the Duke of Edinburgh scheme to help more children as they grow older.
