I haven't been feeling well lately so I haven't been out of the house much, last week I treated myself to a McDonalds via Ubereats they have finally come to my village! When I received my order I asked the driver how his day was going and he replied that he was stressed trying to catch up with himself as he had not been furloughed or hadn't been supported during the lockdown. Hearing this made me very angry and depressed as to how to this Gentleman had been so let down by our Government.
During the pandemic the Government has paid furlough to people who couldn't work I was fortunate enough to be furloughed last year, however millions haven't been as lucky and they have been left out they have created a group called Excluded which has been pressuring the Government rightly to assistance most of them being self employed and business owners.
The COVID pandemic has drawn the curtain open to the acute inequality that is in the country that has been allowed to fester away for years unchecked by the Conservative Party. Over the past year and a bit the kaleidoscope has been shaken the pieces are in flux but before they settle again we need to create society that will truly work for everyone no ifs no buts we need to address inequality once and for all and to get it fixed.
I've been thinking a lot about the gentleman who bought me my food the other week and he is just one of millions in the country who are on the gig economy. Post COVID we need to abolish the gig economy, if you want to employ some one then you should employ them properly with proper health benefits, holiday benefits and on a proper wage not on zero hours contracts. Zero hours contracts need to be consigned to history. We are being slowly transported back to the Victorian era.
The Conservatives have said they want to "level up" which is strange as they have spent the best part of eleven years cutting away at public spending. This is part of the problem I believe in big Government as a I believe that Government can be a force for good in peoples lives. It can give people the help when they really need it and help lift them out of the situation they are in. I also beeive in a society where we all come together as a team to help each other out.
So we need a new deal going forward where the Government will invest in peoples lives this will mean that they need to support education from reception to university we can not let another generation leave university in a massive amount of debt. We need to make sure that houses are being built for people to live in at a low cost we need to make sure that banks will lend people the money they need for a house how does it make sense that banks think people can't afford a mortgage of five hundred pounds a month but the same person will then pay six hundred pounds on private renting the system makes no sense it needs to be shaken up.
We need wholesale change in this country to make it work for everyone everyone has the right to a good education, good healthcare, fair working contracts and the resources to make their lives better. We need to make sure that the United Kingdom is great to grow up in and grow old in.
We also need to invest a lot more into capital projects I agree with building HS2 however we can not stop there we also need to invest more in rail and bring the price of tickets down so that it is more accessible to everyone. Capital Projects will bring more jobs and support local economies. We need to create a society where people are healthy, have a good job that pays well and can access education and travel around the country at ease.
We need to get rid of this short termism thinking we have in this country and start planning for the next fifty years this will give people more certainty then for their jobs and to know what to expect in the future, in addition we also need to invest in STEM a lot more so we can have parity between Silicon Valley. We also need to work closely with our friends in the EU so that we can create opportunities like we did before with them.
